Thanks to a generous donation, Lady Waterford Hall has been able to purchase a stunning portrait of Louisa, Lady Waterford, by James Rannie Swinton commissioned in 1851.
Swinton (1816 – 1888) was born in Berwickshire and studied at Edinburgh’s Trustees’ Academy before being enrolled in the Royal Academy in London in 1840. He soon became one of the most sought-after portrait painters of his day. More of his work can be found at the National Portrait Gallery and the British Museum.
This beautiful portrait was once in the collection of Sir John Swinton of Kimmerghame, near Duns, a descendant of the artist’s family. It can now be seen on display at the Hall – open daily 11am – 5pm (last admission 4.30pm).
