Have you ever wondered what has shaped the landscape here? Northumberland and the Borders have a treasure chest of rocks telling so many different stories in a landscape of extraordinary beauty. Northumbrian Earth has been set up to explore and tell these stories, to the local communities, to visitors and to businesses. You can explore these stories, walking out into our beautiful coast and countryside, and looking at the rocks in the company of Dr Ian Kille, an expert and enthusiast on all things geological.
Walk summary: The view from Goat Crag across the Millfield Plain towards the Cheviot is fabulous. It gives a sense of scale to this long extinct volcano with its ring of lavas underpinning the ridges from Flodden to the Weston Tors then rising to the central igneous intrusions under the Cheviot and Hedgehope. Perspective is something that pondering the geology and landscape gives generously. In this walk the combination of excellent views and the geology that can be traced underfoot allows for a journey from the spectacular edifice of the Cheviot Volcano through the early millenia of the Carboniferous Period.
