Cycling is an ideal way to experience the full beauty of the estate and the surrounding countryside. With quiet roads and off-road paths exploring Ford & Etal on bicycles is a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Refreshments are available at various outlets in the villages on and near the Estates and, of course, there are number of attractions to visit in the area.
Cycle racks are in place on the Heatherslaw Mill site, outside the Lady Waterford Hall and at Lavender Tearooms in Etal.
Sustrans Route 68 (Berwick-upon-Tweed to Derby) runs through the estate and there is an option to follow an off-road path (hard surface) along the banks of the River Till, a lovely route which offers ample opportunities to view wildlife on the river.
Cycle Hire is available from Heatherslaw Visitor Centre. The bicycles are good quality road/trail bikes (NOT off-road bikes) with a range of 8 adult bikes, an adult tandem, 2 x 20" and 2 x 24" children's bikes and a baby seat.
Subscribing to the voluntary Cycle Hire Code of Practice, we provide helmets, bike locks and have maps and suggested routes available to suit all levels of ability and interest. PLEASE NOTE that for reasons of health and safety, hirers must be able to comfortably reach the ground with their feet when seated on the bike and must be confident cyclists.
