A Profile of Ford & Etal Estates

Situated on the valley of the River Till (the only English tributary of the Tweed) and centered around the villages of Ford & Etal. The estates cover 6000 hectares (15000 acres) of productive agricultural lands. On this around 650 hectares (1600 acres) is given over to commercial forestry and amenity woodland.

Like many landed estates in Britain Ford & Etal is administered from an estate office, situated in Ford village which oversees the work of the different departments. The principle work of the estate centres around:

  • Lettings of farms, houses and cottages
  • Forestry and timber production
  • Game keeping and fishing
  • Buildings maintenance
  • Grounds maintenance
  • Accountancy
  • Tourism and leisure department

Historically, Ford & Etal were two separate estates owned by different landowners. It was not until the early part of the 20th century that the two estates were united when the 1st Lord Joicey purchased Ford in 1907 and Etal in 1908. Today the estates remain in the ownership of the Joicey family.

The area is rich in history and the estate lands include Flodden field, the site of the battle of Flodden in 1513.
